Procedure
Task-1: To place the FTTH network components and cables at appropriate places.

Solution-1: Student should understand the placement of each component and cable as per below diagram.




Follow the steps given below:

  • Step 1:Place the OLT as per the network diagram. (Internet cloud would be pre displayed in solution)
  • Step 2:Place the Feeder Cable as per the network diagram.
  • Step 3:Place the S1 Equipment (Joint Closure & Splitter) as per the network diagram.
  • Step 4:Place the Distribution Cables as per the network diagram towards other area and towards Home Termination Box (HTB).
  • Step 5:Place the S2 Equipment (Home Termination Box) as per the network diagram.
  • Step 6: Place the Patch Cord between HTB and ONU as per the network diagram.
  • Step 7: Place the ONT (Optical Network Unit) as per the network diagram.
  • Step 8: Place the Wifi Signal Symbol showing signals flow from ONT to set top box and wifi user devices (Laptop/Computer/Mobile) as per the network diagram.
  • Step 9:Place the Wifi User Devices (Laptop/Computer/Mobile) as per the network diagram
  • Step 10:Place the Set Top Box as per the network diagram.
  • Step 11: Place the HDMI Cable between set top box and television as per the network diagram.
  • Step 12:Place the Television (TV) as per the network diagram.



Task-2: To arrange the fiber colours from fiber number 1 to 12 as per fiber colour code standards.




Follow the steps given below:

  • Step 1: Place the Blue colour in front of Fiber number 1.
  • Step 2: Place the Orange colour in front of Fiber number 2.
  • Step 3: Place the Green colour in front of Fiber number 3.
  • Step 4: Place the Brown colour in front of Fiber number 4.
  • Step 5: Place the Slate colour in front of Fiber number 5.
  • Step 6: Place the White colour in front of Fiber number 6.
  • Step 7: Place the Red colour in front of Fiber number 7.
  • Step 8: Place the Black colour in front of Fiber number 8.
  • Step 9: Place the Yellow colour in front of Fiber number 9.
  • Step 10: Place the Violet colour in front of Fiber number 10.
  • Step 11: Place the Pink colour in front of Fiber number 11.
  • Step 12: Place the Aqua colour in front of Fiber number 12.

Task-3: To splice (join) the two ends of the optical fiber using Fusion Splice Machine and place the splice in splice tray. (Only single fiber to be spliced)


Step 1: Safety Precautions
  1. Wear the safety glass or laser goggle before splicing.
  2. Clean the work area to make it dust free.
  3. Place the splice machine and tools on Black Safety Mat.


Step 2: Cable Preparation for Splicing
  1. Use Cable Cutter to cut the cable of desired length.


  2. Use Round Cutter to make circular cut in the cable at 1m length from the end.


  3. Use Cable Sheath Stripper to remove the jacket of the cable OR Use Rip Cord of the cable to tear the jacket of the cable.




  4. Remove the cable strength members (armour/yarn/tapes) and loose tubes.


  5. Single out the fiber to be spliced from the cable and clean the fiber using lint free tissue.




Step 3: Placement of Protection Sleeve over the Fiber
  1. Place fusion splice protection sleeve over the fiber to be spliced




Step 4: Strip the Fiber
  1. Hold the first fiber to be spliced and remove the 250um fiber coating of atleast 5cm length of the fiber using fiber stripper


  2. Use third hole to strip the 250um coating down to the glass fiber without nicks or scratches. (First hole is used to strip the 2-3 mm fiber jacket down to the 900 micron buffer coating and second hole to strip the 900 micron buffer coating down to the 250 micron coating)




Step 5: Clean the Stripped Fiber
  1. Carefully clean the stripped bare fiber with lint-free tissue/wipes soaked in isopropyl alcohol. After cleaning, do not touch the cleaned fiber.




Step 6: Cleave the Fiber
  1. Put the stripped and cleaned fiber on to the fiber groove of the cleaver. (For 40mm protection sleeve, end of stripped fiber coating should be placed at 15mm marking on cleaver whereas, for 60mm protection sleeve, end of stripped fiber coating should be placed at 20mm marking on cleaver).


  2. Close the lid (Fiber Holder).


  3. Press down the cutting lever and release the pressure on the cutting lever. A spring force will bring it to its open position.




Step 7: Prepare the Second Fiber for Splicing
  1. Prepare second fiber for splicing. Strip, clean and cleave the second fiber to be spliced. (Repeat the above mentioned Step 4 to Step 6 for second fiber).




Step 8: Splice the Two Ends of Fiber using Fusion Splice Machine
  1. Power On the Splice Machine.


  2. Open the wind-protector of fusion splicing machine and place the cleaved fiber on the V Groove of the machine as shown in image below. Press the fiber holder down to hold the fiber. Be careful not to contact the fiber tips to maintain fiber end-face quality.


  3. Close the wind-protector.
  4. Press the “View Key” on splicing machine. Splicer shows the view of cleaved fiber ends from two (X and Y) dimensions on the screen (magnifier window). Core and Clad of the fiber is also recognizable on the screen.


  5. Press the “Set Key” on splicing machine. Splice machine automatically generates the arc to fuse the fiber.


  6. On successful fusion, "OK" and sound beeps to remove the splice from the machine. The splicing machine also shows estimated splice loss on the screen with two dimensional view of splice. It is ensured to achieve individual splice loss less than 0.1 dB. The splice can be evaluated and categorized as good and bad splice on the basis of loss and splice view on screen (Refer Process 4 - Splicing of theory section).


Step 9: Removing the Splice from Machine
  1. Open wind protector manually
  2. Open fiber holders and hold left fiber with left hand and right with right hand
  3. Remove the spliced fiber joint from wind protector




Step 10: Protecting the Splice
  1. Slide the fusion splice protection sleeve on the joint. Make sure the splice point is located at the center of the protection sleeve.


  2. Place the sleeve in Heater unit (Heater lids automatically gets opened and closed on placement of sleeved splice).


  3. Press the ‘HEAT Key’ to start heating


  4. On completion of heating (usually 30 sec), buzzer will sound and heater lid opens automatically.




Step 11: Placement of Splice in Splice Tray
  1. Place incoming and outgoing fibers into splice tray secure with cable ties.


  2. Place spliced fibers into the sleeve holders arranged according to color code.


  3. Carefully coil the outgoing fiber slack into the tray (coil 1). Ensure that the fiber’s minimum bending radius is not compromised.


  4. Carefully coil incoming fiber slack into the tray (coil 2). Ensure that the fiber’s minimum bending radius is not compromised.




Step 12: Splicing Site Restoration
  1. Place the Fusion Splice Machine and its accessories in the box.
  2. Dispose off fiber scraps and cable waste at appropriate location.
  3. Clean the black safety mat and dispose the tiny fiber scraps carefully at designated place.
